Chapter 3

Barriers that young people face in adaptation actions

Institutional challenges

There continues to exist institutional challenges for youth to meaningfully participate in climate action. The adaptive capacity of young people to contribute and support climate adaptation efforts are underestimated and ignored by other actors. This section seeks to explore the barriers created by a lack of political will and deficiencies in institutional arrangements.

Capacity challenges

A lack of capacity on the young people’s part may undermine youth engagement in meaningful climate action. These challenges may manifest in the form of lack of (including access to) entitlements: financial capital, human capital, social capital, natural capital, and physical capital to drive action towards adaptation.

Ways to address and mitigate these barriers

This section seeks to address some of the barriers mentioned in the previous sections and provide possible solutions to these challenges.
